What I'm Up To These Days

Hello. I'm Anna Marie January, a mixed media artist living in Los Angeles, California.

Currently I'm painting with acrylics on canvas in addition to my sculpting.  I have fallen in love with nebulae and am also exploring patterns and symbols that have been a recurring theme in my life and have acquired a new significance for me.

My sculptures are made from hexagonal wire mesh (aka common chicken wire). The inherent qualities of the wire are perfect for creating lightweight pieces that are both form and space--there and not there. My wirework, whether a stand alone sculpture, or a piece that is attached to a painted canvas, allows air, light and love to move through it. Isn't it true that all the good stuff happens in the spaces between?

I discovered my love for working with the hexagonal mesh in 2010 while studying figurative sculpture with artist Cynthia Minet.  In 2015, I began pairing my sculptures with my paintings. So, does this make my art 5D?

Inspired by the human condition and beyond, I hope to create work that sparks recognition, little patches of remembrance, and smiles for us both.
