I work with hexagonal wire mesh (aka common, some might say "ugly" chicken wire) to create figurative sculptures. I also paint with acrylics on canvas. Sometimes I combine the two. The inherent qualities of the wire enable me to create lightweight sculptures that are both form and space--there and not there. Whether stand-alone pieces, or mixed media works, my figures allow air and light to move through and play with them. I've learned that interesting things can happen "in the spaces between."
Honoring my creativity is one of the ways I tend to my own frequency. I believe that whatever one does to strive for a higher connection is very important work, especially in these times, and is impactful far beyond our personal spheres in ways we may not fully understand.
My goal is to be as clear a channel as I can be, while continuing to evolve in my various practices, including my art--and wherever that leads me.
Though these times can be extremely challenging, there is beauty in our human condition and beyond it. Perhaps my artwork, and the frequency it carries with it, will bring you a smile. That would complete the circle and make me smile even more!
In gratitude,
-Anna Marie January

About
Welcome and thank you for visiting my site. My name is Anna Marie January and I'm a mixed media artist living in Los Angeles.
I work with hexagonal wire mesh (aka common, some might say "ugly" chicken wire) to creative figurative sculptures. Sometimes I pair them with my paintings. Sometimes I just paint. Whether they are stand-alone sculptures, or mixed media pieces, my figures allow air and light to move through and play with them.

I'm mostly self-taught, having been creative all of my life, whether I was drawing, painting, dancing, writing, or designing interiors and costumes. In the mid to late 2000's I decided to take some interior design courses at my local community college. Along the way I discovered a passion for sculpting the figure while studying with the wonderful artist and professor Cynthia Minet.
It was in one of her classes in 2010 that I developed a fondness for working with the wire. Though I had been experimenting with painting on and off for years before that, I paired my first painting with a sculpture in 2014.
I have work in private collections around California, including in Los Angeles, Northridge, Pacific Palisades, Pasadena, Sacramento, Thousand Oaks and Woodland Hills.
I was born in East Los Angeles at The Japanese Hospital in Boyle Heights. Though my early years were often spent in the backseat of our car traveling back and forth across the U.S., (Hawaii would be the exception here), we always returned to California. I'm a third generation Californian on my mother's side.
The Japanese Hospital, which was established in response to the discrimination immigrant and American born Japanese experienced in the early 20th century, had developed a reputation for providing excellent care and serving a diverse population.
For this reason, my parents, who were an interracial couple at a time when it was illegal for them, as a Black man and a White woman, to be married in several states due to anti-miscegenation laws, felt more welcome there.
People often remark that I've led a very unconventional life at times. It's true that I do have some stories to tell...
Most importantly, I am a mother to two beautiful children, one recently married, and one in spirit, who is dearly loved and missed and is most certainly watching over us.
